The Old Sinker Cypress Shop is the place to go to bring beautiful sinker cypress wood into your life. Our goal is to provide everyone that loves old Sinker Cypress as much as we do a way to bring some home.
The beautiful preserved woodgrain on its own is warm and stunning and speaks for itself. But the history behind the Sinker Cypress wood used at Old Sinker Cypress Shop is most intriguing.
The commercial logging of old Cypress in Louisiana mostly happened between 1895 and 1925. The method to transport the huge logs was to float them through waterways to sawmills in south Louisiana. Many logs did not make it to the mills. They sank to water bottoms, hence the name Sinker Cypress. Most logs were under water 100 years or more.
A side note - some time ago, Shelby Stanga, legendary Louisiana swamp figure and of YouTube Axe Men fame, pulled many Sinker Cypress logs from the bottom of Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. My friend Charlie Lange got all his sinker logs from Shelby, and we get all our lumber from Charlie. And now you get to take some home!
All furniture and other items featured here are handcrafted in a quaint shop on the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain from Shelby's old Sinker Cypress logs. It's a great Louisiana story. Sad that most of the old growth Cypress in Louisiana was wiped out during logging years, but happy that some of the old logs have been reclaimed. It is a finite and precious resource. I am a happy dad nearing retirement with a fantastic wife and 2 great adult kids looking for something new and exciting to do. I love old wood and being creative so I started the Old Sinker Cypress Shop with a goal to provide people a way to bring some of this wonderful old Sinker Cypress into their homes. I teamed up with a guy that got old Cypress logs pulled from the bottom of Lake Pontchartrain and Maurepas, and a master wood craftsman who has a passion for building just about anything out of wood, and here we are!
